What I Do

Dunedin Treatment Programme

One on One Counselling

I offer a private 1-1 drug and alcohol counselling service. A comprehensive assessment will inform your choices as to treatment options. The treatment plan will include a detailed relapse prevention plan incorporating cognitive behavioural therapy, a strengths based approach, and personal coaching.

Private Therapy

There is no group work involved, so you can be treated in complete privacy. The treatment programme will be designed around your lifestyle. It’s important that the elements work with your current situation. It will be informed by the choices you make and will proceed at the pace that’s best for you.

Drug & Alcohol Assessments

I am an approved Ministry of Health assessor to conduct drug and alcohol assessments for driver licensing purposes.

Written Reports

I also offer written reports for legal or professional purposes and can arrange a medically supervised detoxification if required.

Evidence-based Drug & Alcohol Counselling

I work from a harm reduction stance and in a collaborative and motivational way.  Family involvement is encouraged, but not mandatory.  All treatment options we will pursue are evidence based and are considered the "gold standard" in this type of therapy.

What the Therapy Programme Covers

Why It Works

How Treatment Works

Cognitive behavioural therapy works through understanding our thoughts and feelings and how they are connected to psychological cues to use alcohol and substances.  The therapist and client then work together to develop and practice a clear plan of action.  CBT therapy will normally involve the following elements: techniques to address ambivalence and enhance motivation, an understanding of your high risk situations, techniques to enhance the ability to ride out cues and triggers and deal with those situations, cognitive work around your expectations around substance use, enhancement of your belief in the ability to change your behaviours, techniques to deal with strong emotions, to communicate better, to be more assertive and relaxation training.  Therapy might also include training in mindfulness, managing boredom, anxiety and depression. (Curran & Drummond, 2006)

Motivational interviewing discovers what really motivates you to want to change and helps with that change. (Marlatt & Witkiewitz, 2005)

Personal coaching helps with motivational goals. A strengths based approach is taken to harness your own abilities to work through the treatment plan.

Mindfulness can help to explore thought processes in more depth and to link those discoveries with more functional coping responses to emotional and cognitive cues. (Cayoun, 2011)

Depression and anxiety are often associated with substance and alcohol abuse and dependency. Strategies to help deal with these issues serve to help you integrate your relapse prevention programme more effectively. (Miller & Brown, 2009)

Referrals

Follow up care

At times clients will need to be referred through to clinical psychologists or psychiatrists or GP’s or to specialists in family therapy. I am able to refer through to alcohol and substance dependence specialists in all of these areas who have worked for many years in this field with positive outcomes.

About Bryce

I have been working in the addictions field for the last 17 years as an assessor and counsellor in well-known organisations in the field. I hold a Bachelor of Alcohol and Drug Studies and a Masters in Social Work and am qualified as a clinical supervisor. I currently hold a full time clinical role in the field and manage a small private practice.

Specialising in evidence based relapse prevention treatment and case management, I utilise a number of modalities including cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness and personal coaching to put treatment plans in place. All treatment plans are drawn up after a comprehensive assessment and in conjunction with you so that they fit your lifestyle.

Because of my other commitments, I can only see a limited number of clients, but can refer you on to other counsellors should it be the case that I cannot fit you in.

The Science of Abuse and Dependency Issues

Below you will find a link to neuroscientist Nora Volkow director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at NIH. Dr Volkow talks about addiction which is an American term. I prefer to use the term alcohol or substance issue.
