Founded in 1999, Groundworks Civil Contractors is a locally owned civil contractor based in the Hutt Valley, and operating throughout the greater Wellington region. Our capability ranges from one-off civil construction jobs to large, complex multi-stage projects.

Our civil contractor services
We work with local councils, infrastructure companies, property developers, commercial and residential builders, and private owners throughout the Wellington region.
Our strong capability includes trenching, laying and testing for the connection, upgrade or renewal of water, drainage and sewer systems across the Wellington region.

Groundworks team – highly experienced and qualified
Led by owners Hamish Rees and John Smith, the Groundworks management team brings a wealth of qualifications, knowledge and experience to projects.
With a NZ Diploma in Civil Engineering, Hamish has worked for 15 years in site engineering, contract management and project management, covering all facets of civil construction. John has a NZ Certificate in Engineering and 30 years’ experience in council civil construction projects, and contracting businesses. He has run Groundworks from its beginning.
At the field level, Groundworks’ two key foremen are Paul Sievers and Fabian Spencer. Paul has been involved in civil contracting since he was 16, starting as an operator before moving into running sites and crews. He is a highly experienced and capable foreman. Fabian is our drainage foreman. He comes from a family of drainlayers, and has been laying drains for 30 years on water mains, sewage and stormwater projects.
