Out and About

Division 2 – Finished out of a placing
FIVES:

Division 2 – Finished 4th

Division 2 - Finished out of a placing

Irene – Wilma – Sylvia (are the only ones left)
The Women’s Championship Senior Singles was notable for the high calibre of bowling, the never-say-die attitude of many players, the emergence of promising new bowlers and the good spirit evident between club members.

By Saturday night the large field of starters was whittled down to nine. Sylvia Rowe and Wilma Ennor still had 2 lives intact. One-lifers included Brenda Falvey, Julie Haslett, Val Ives, Irene Millar, Shirley Goffin, Colleen McLaughlin and Lynda Boyd.

Hot humid conditions on Sunday made competitive bowling difficult but the standard of play appeared to go even higher. Only three players remained in the championship at the close of the day; Sylvia Rowe (2 lives), Wilma Ennor (1 life) and Irene Millar (1 life).

Next Saturday will see the completion of this enthralling event. Irene will play Wilma at 8.30 am and the winner of that game will play Sylvia. Good luck, ladies!

Can You Refuse The Mat?
During the Women’s singles last Saturday one team decided to give the mat away – but the other team did not want it. Can the other team refuse the mat?

18.4     Play in other ends
In all ends after the first but apart from in an extra end, the winner of the previous scoring end should choose whether to:
· place the mat and deliver the jack and the first bowl; or
· tell the opposing player to place the mat and deliver the jack and the first bowl (the opposing player cannot refuse).

Kitty and Jack

My husband took up bowling
and he bragged upon the phone
about some dame called Kitty
whom he couldn't leave alone

He played with Kitty
he stayed with Kitty
he picked her up without a hitch

He missed Kitty
he kissed Kitty
he even lay beside her in the ditch

So I took up bowling
to win my hubby back
and found that what he could do with Kitty,
I could do with Jack

HB Women’s Open Pairs
This will take place in a week’s time (22, 23, 24, 25 January)

Handicap Singles (11 Feb)
Entries are being taken now for this popular event. It starts on Sunday 11th February at 10.00 am. The next time you are at the club be sure to put your name down on the entry form.

Coaching Begins this Week
I was impressed with the numbers attending coaching lessons up to Christmas. Perhaps this explains the high standard of bowling in our club.  Anyone wishing to avail themselves of this service, regular coaching lessons begin next Thursday at 4.00 pm

Playoff For Men’s East Coast Chartered Clubs Tournament (Fours)
I mentioned some time ago that Taradale is allocated two entries in this year’s event but since more than two teams wanted to take part there will be a playoff tomorrow (Tuesday 9th – 8.30 am) to determine who may enter.
The Chartered Clubs Ttournament will be held on 6-7-8 March 2007 at Port Ahuriri Bowling Club.

More Fun On The Green

Toss-up
The boys had arranged to have a practice roll-up before the big event. Sunday morning was chosen, and they all arrived on time except Fred. When he finally arrived, the others all asked; "What kept you?"
“Well, it was a toss-up as to whether I went to church or joined you blokes bowling," Fred replied.
"That shouldn't have taken long," said the skip.
"Well it did. I had to toss 13 times".

Quote
The main idea in bowls is to learn to accept what cannot be altered, and to keep on doing one's own best whether the prospect be bleak or rosy.

Playing out of Turn
At a BBQ last night the topic of bowls reared its head and one person asked what happens if a player delivers a bowl out of turn. Should the bowl be stopped before coming to rest – and, if so, by whom? What happens if it disturbs another bowl or the jack? What happens if it doesn’t disturb anything? Before looking at the section below do you know the answer?

Section 12 – Irregularities
47        Irregularities during play
47.1     Playing out of turn

1 If a player plays out of turn, the opposing skip can stop the bowl and return it to the player to play it in the proper order.
2 If the bowl has come to rest and has not disturbed the head, the opposing skip should choose whether to:
·  leave the head as it is and have their team play two bowls one after the other to get back to the proper order of play; or
·  return the bowl and get back to the proper order of play.
3 If the bowl has disturbed the head, the opposing skip should choose whether to:
·  leave the disturbed head as it is and have their team play two bowls one after the other to get back to the proper order of play;
·  replace the head in its former position, return the bowl and go back to the proper order of play; or
·  declare the end dead.

Women’s Championship Senior Singles
Starts next Saturday at 8.30 am.  “Good Bowling” to all those taking part.
